A worked example
A 19 by 11 ft patio in 24 × 24 in slabs, 5 % waste needs 55 slabs. 209 square feet at 4 square feet per slab is 52.3, and the allowance takes it to 55.
What else it is called
Pavers are also sold as patio stones, patio slabs or paving stones, and the brick-shaped ones as paver bricks. What matters for the count is the face size you select, not the name.

Where the numbers come from
- Paver coverage is the size you select, multiplied out: a 24 by 24 inch paver covers 4 square feet. You tell the page which paver you are buying, so no figure here is ours to source.
A patio laid on a diagonal or a herringbone pattern cuts more pieces than a straight grid. That is what the waste allowance is for, and only you know your pattern.
